Yoshihiro Togashi will stop taking deadline work for his health

The Hunter x Hunter creator says he will decline future work requests with deadlines once his current commissions are finished, citing physical and mental health.

Yoshihiro Togashi has said he will stop taking on work that comes with a deadline. In a statement on X on Monday, the Hunter x Hunter creator said physical and mental health issues mean he will decline future work requests once his current commissions are finished, so that he can give his attention to his own manuscripts.

A schedule already set by his health

The decision narrows an already careful working pattern. Hunter x Hunter returned from hiatus on 29 June 2026 and went back on break on 7 September, leaving the story at its 420th chapter. On 15 September, Togashi said he had finished the manuscript for chapter 428.

Shueisha published the manga's 39th collected volume on 3 July 2026, the first new volume in 22 months. The series' output has long been governed by its author's health rather than any editorial calendar, and the new statement makes that arrangement explicit: the work continues, but only the work he chooses.

Our opinion

Manga publishing runs on deadlines the way newspapers run on print runs, so a creator of Togashi's standing telling the industry he will simply stop accepting them is a quiet test of how much a hit series can be allowed to set its own terms. The realistic reading is not that Hunter x Hunter is ending, but that it will proceed at the pace of one person's recovery, with the gaps priced in. Readers who have followed the serialisation for years already know the arithmetic; what is new is hearing it stated as policy rather than apology.
