Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? sets January 2027
Ryon's manga about the girl everyone warns you about gets a teaser trailer, a SynergySP production and a late-night slot on Japanese television.
The anime adaptation of Ryon's Are You a Landmine, Chihara-san? has a date, a look and a timeslot. The show's official site published a teaser promotional video on 18 September and confirmed the series will debut in January 2027, after originally being slated for a 2026 broadcast.
It will run in the Super Animeism Turbo block on MBS, TBS and 26 affiliate stations on Thursdays at 00:26, which in practice lands it in the early hours of Friday morning. Yasuaki Fujii directs at SynergySP, Keiichiro Ochi is writing the series composition, Majiro is designing the characters and Arisa Okehazama is composing the score for King Records, with Hisae Arimoto as art director, Emi Kadono on colour, Naotaka Watanabe on photography and Daiki Hachimaki handling sound direction.
Who is Chihara-san
The premise is a school comedy built on a very modern Japanese archetype. Kuroki, an ordinary second-year boy, finds himself seated next to Mai Chihara, the girl classmates whisper about, and the visual shorthand does the work before she says a word: porcelain skin, dark hair, a stare that could cut glass, the jirai-kei look that anime and fashion have spent the past decade turning into its own genre of character.
Chihara is voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro. Kazuki Ura plays Kuroki, Maaya Uchida is Chinatsu Iwakura and Tomokazu Sugita rounds out the announced cast as Hibiya. What Kuroki discovers is that the reputation is mostly wrong: underneath the aura, Chihara is sweet, a bit odd and a devoted fan of gyoza.
Ryon has serialised the manga on the GANMA! service since June 2021, and it took a Next Impact Comic award at the 2024 Rakuten Kobo E-book Awards. Seven Seas Entertainment holds the English licence, which is how most readers outside Japan will meet Chihara before the anime arrives.
Our opinion
SynergySP is the right studio for this. It is a workhorse outfit with a long run of adaptations behind it and it tends to be reliable rather than showy, which suits a comedy whose entire pitch rests on two people sitting next to each other and misreading every silence. The teaser leans hard on the contrast between Chihara's gothic framing and her actual personality, and the show will live or die on whether that contrast stays funny for twelve episodes.
The slide from 2026 into January 2027 puts it into an already crowded winter season, and the Thursday 00:26 Animeism slot means the production committee is expecting an audience that watches late and keeps up with manga first. That is the audience that made a Next Impact Comic award mean something in the first place, so the scheduling is at least honest about who this is for.
