Black Clover's Asta, Yuno and Noelle arrive in Fortnite

Epic Games has added Black Clover's Asta, Yuno and Noelle to the Fortnite item shop for this year's Fortnitemares event, timed to the weekend the anime's new season began.

Epic Games has brought the Black Clover anime into Fortnite Battle Royale for this year's Fortnitemares event. The collaboration was announced on 3 October, and the outfits for Asta, Yuno and Noelle are now in the game's item shop.

What the crossover adds

Alongside the three outfits, the tie-in adds back bling modelled on the characters' grimoires — Asta's Grimoire, Yuno's Grimoire and Noelle's Grimoire — as well as Asta's Devils Wings. Epic teased the collaboration in the Fortnitemares trailer on 29 September, which briefly showed the Asta outfit in his Devil Form.

Timed to the anime's return

Black Clover began as Yūki Tabata's manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 2015, later moving to the quarterly Jump Giga magazine before it concluded. The anime first aired in October 2017 and ran for more than 150 episodes, and the feature film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King followed in 2023. A new season, again animated by Studio Pierrot, began on 3 October and streams on Crunchyroll.

Our opinion

An anime collaboration in Fortnite stopped being a surprise several seasons ago, so the interesting question is no longer whether Shueisha says yes, but how tightly Epic Games can time the shop drop to the broadcast. Landing Asta, Yuno and Noelle on the same weekend the new season premieres turns the game into a promotion channel that a weekly streaming schedule cannot match, and it does so without the studio paying for the slot. The choice of grimoires as back bling is the detail that gives the crossover away as a considered one: Epic knows players want the props visible in the middle of a fight, not just posed in a lobby. Whether Fortnitemares needed an anime hook at all is debatable, but the item shop will settle that argument quickly.
