Black Clover Season 2 voice actors discuss Asta's return

Gakuto Kajiwara and Dallas Reid explain how they returned to Asta after five years and how the character has changed in Black Clover Season 2.

Black Clover Season 2 has brought Asta back after a five-year break, and the actors behind his Japanese and English voices say the character feels familiar even as he continues to grow. Gakuto Kajiwara and Dallas Reid discussed returning to the role in an interview with Anime Corner during New York Comic Con. 1

The interview offers a look at how the two performances have developed since the original run. Kajiwara said Asta's growth is tied to his own career, while Reid described finding a version of the character that no longer needs to shout simply to be heard. Both actors also spoke about the practical challenge of stepping back into a role after the long gap. 1

Asta after the five-year gap

For Kajiwara, Asta never really left. After recording 178 episodes, he said the character remained part of him and returned naturally when production resumed. Reid had the opposite experience at first: he said he became increasingly nervous as the recording date approached, worried that the voice would not come back after five years away. Once he reached the booth, however, the performance returned immediately. 1

The actors also described different sides of Asta's relationship with Yuno. Kajiwara draws on the feeling of trying to catch up with peers, while Reid focuses on the idea that the two characters are brothers without genuine bad blood between them. Their rivalry is therefore less about hostility than about pushing each other towards their best selves. 1

Kajiwara said viewers will see more of Asta's vulnerability in Season 2, including the parts of his upbringing and lack of magic that sit beneath his loudest moments. Reid argued that Asta's yelling never represented the whole character, although some viewers were unwilling to look past it early in the series. 1

Crunchyroll's official trailer presents the returning series as a new saga for Asta and Yuno, while the service is streaming the season now. 23

Our opinion

The useful part of this interview is not another promise that Asta is getting stronger. It is the contrast between the actors' working methods: one treats the role as a long-running part of his identity, while the other had to rediscover it under pressure. That makes the five-year return feel like a performance story as much as a plot milestone, and it gives Season 2's familiar energy a more human explanation.
