Firefly Wedding's main trailer gives iri her first anime theme

The anime adaptation of Oreko Tachibana's Firefly Wedding now has a full trailer, a confirmed theme song and a fixed broadcast date. Fuji TV's anime channel published the main promotional video on 18 September, built around 'Period', a newly written song from iri and her first tie-in with an anime production.

What the trailer confirms

The series begins on 9 October 2026 in Fuji TV's NoitaminA slot, airing on Fridays at 23:30 in Japan. AT-X picks it up from 16 October with a Friday 23:00 broadcast and repeats on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. Streaming starts on 9 October from 24:00 across ABEMA, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, U-NEXT, Hulu, DMM TV, FOD and Lemino, with rental storefronts following. That schedule is Japanese, and the platforms differ by territory, so a UK viewer should expect Netflix or Disney+ to be the reliable route rather than the full list.

The team behind it

david production, the studio behind JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Cells at Work!, is animating. Takahiro Kamei directs, Yuko Kakihara (The Apothecary Diaries, Urusei Yatsura) handles series composition and scripts, and Yukiko Aikei (Your Lie in April) designs the characters. Lynn leads the cast as Satoko Kirigaya, the frail heiress who wants to marry well for her father's sake, opposite Koki Uchiyama as Shinpei Goto, the assassin hired to kill her. Kent Ito plays her childhood friend and bodyguard Kotaro Ogawa, Kenjiro Tsuda plays the gangster Mitsueda, and Kazuhiro Yamaji, Haruhi Nanao and Hika Tsukishiro round out the Kirigaya household.

Five million copies and a nasty streak

Tachibana's manga has more than five million copies in circulation and took the 2024 Electronic Comic Award, and it placed in a 2025 poll of the manga readers most wanted as anime. The premise is a Meiji-era romance with a harder edge than that framing suggests: Satoko marries into a distinguished family to protect her father's name, and the man who becomes obsessed with her was paid to end her life. The key art released so far shows the blood. Much of the appeal sits in the patient, unsettling distance between those two facts.

Our opinion

Handing a theme song to an artist with no anime credits is a gamble that productions take more often than they used to, and it tends to pay off in exactly this slot. iri's music sits naturally against a story about a woman raised to be useful and a man who has decided she is not allowed to be. A proven anisong act would have been the safe booking; NoitaminA's audience is the one that notices when a show does not take the safe booking.

The bigger test is tone. This is a love story that opens with a contract killing, and the fireflies-and-camellias styling will make it very easy to market as pure romance to an audience that has not read the manga. david production has a respectable record with atmospheres this specific, and a story that treats obsession as both tender and lethal is more honest when the lethal part stays on screen. Nine October arrives quickly enough that we will know whether it does.
