Firefly Wedding TV Anime Casts Natsuko Abe as Aoi

Natsuko Abe joins the Firefly Wedding anime as Aoi, Satoko's mentor and a courtesan with a gentle demeanour.

Firefly Wedding (ホタルの嫁入り) has added Natsuko Abe to its television anime cast as Aoi, Satoko's mentor and a courtesan whose gentle manner gives her a distinct place in the story's increasingly complicated household. The announcement came from the anime's official account on 29 October and was reported by Anime News Network. 12

Aoi is described as a mentor to Satoko, the noblewoman at the centre of the series, and as someone who watches over her from the courtesan quarter. That makes the casting more than a simple name added to an already crowded ensemble: Aoi's relationship with Satoko should give the anime another perspective on the pressures surrounding its heroine.

What we know

Abe joins a cast led by Lynn as Satoko Kirigaya and Koki Uchiyama as Shinpei Goto. The wider cast includes Kent Ito as Kotaro Ogawa and Kenjiro Tsuda as Mitsueda, while the new character artwork presents Aoi in a patterned kimono alongside a seated portrait. The visual is official promotional artwork credited to the anime's official account. 12

The series began airing in Japan on 9 October in Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block, with episodes scheduled on Fridays at 11:30 p.m. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime as it airs, and an English dub began on 23 October, according to Anime News Network. 1

Takahiro Kamei directs at David Production, with Yukiko Aikei handling character designs and Yuko Kakihara overseeing and writing the series scripts. NOGRID is composing the music. Iri performs the opening theme, “Period”, while TOOBOE performs the ending theme, “Yumegokochi”. 1

Our opinion

Aoi looks like a useful addition because Firefly Wedding works best when its romance is surrounded by people who understand the rules Satoko is trying to survive. Giving Abe a role tied to Satoko's mentorship and the courtesan quarter creates room for the adaptation to show how other women read the dangers around her, rather than letting every plot turn pass through the central romance alone. It is too early to judge Abe's performance from a cast announcement, but the character's position suggests a welcome expansion of the anime's emotional viewpoint.

The timing also matters. With the series already airing, this is a character who can affect the current run rather than a distant promise for a later season. Viewers can now watch for how Aoi changes Satoko's support network, and whether her gentle demeanour conceals the practical knowledge needed to navigate the world around Shinpei.

Firefly Wedding is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, with availability and dub schedules varying by territory. The anime is based on Oreko Tachibana's manga, which Viz Media publishes in English. 13
