Re:ZERO ends season 4 with a 45-minute finale
Episode 85, Shaula / Hero, takes an extended late-night slot on 30 September, and the official site has published the synopsis and preview cuts for it.
Re:ZERO −Starting Life in Another World− is finishing its fourth season the long way round. The 19th episode of the run, known in Japan as 第85話「シャウラ／英雄」 (Shaula / Hero), will air on 30 September as a 45-minute extended special rather than a standard half-hour. The show's official site confirmed the length on Tuesday, and it comes with a side effect: because the slot is longer, the end times shift for every broadcaster, and three regional stations have moved their start times to keep the schedules honest — Tohoku Broadcasting and Chugoku Broadcasting to 26:25, Nagasaki Broadcasting to 26:02.

The synopsis, also published on 29 September alongside advance cuts, sets the finale at the top of the Pleiades Watchtower. Emilia, voiced by Rie Takahashi, finds a black monolith and six handprints. Volcanica — the Divine Dragon who regained consciousness in the previous episode, and who has been voiced by Daisuke Ono since his reveal in September — greets her as Satella, the Witch of Envy, and attacks her all over again. Emilia answers by attempting an extreme-scale spell to counter what the site calls the breath of myth. Down on the dunes, Subaru Natsuki (Yusuke Kobayashi) and Beatrice are still holding back a stampede of demon beasts when Julius (Takuya Eguchi) arrives to reinforce them. The site's own summary frames all of it as the final stage of the tower assault.
The episode is credited to scriptwriter Masahiro Yokotani, with storyboards and direction from Masahiro Shinohara alongside Kazue Otsuki and Yusuke Maruyama, and chief animation direction from Haruka Sagawa, Chie Mishima and Yasuyuki Noda. WHITE FOX is animating, and Tappei Nagatsuki's original light novels remain the source.
A mini episode comes with it
The extended slot also carries the 85th instalment of Re:ZERO Break Time, the chibi mini-anime that trails each episode. It is titled 「サソリのおとぎ話」 (The Scorpion's Fairy Tale), and its synopsis is a one-line gut punch: Shaula waits in the watchtower for her master, staring out across the desert for years, then decades, then centuries. AT-X airs it right after the main episode, and it streams on the official Re:ZERO YouTube channel on Wednesdays at 23:30 JST.
The promotional machine is already past the finale
Re:ZERO has a special stage at the MF Bunko J Autumn School Festival 2026 on 22 November, running 19:30 to 20:30 JST, with Rie Takahashi, Satomi Arai (Beatrice) and Takuya Eguchi (Julius) plus a live set from Konomi Suzuki. The series' tenth-anniversary tour also stops at Machi Asobi in Tokushima on 18 October, with Takahashi and Yusuke Kobayashi on stage.
Our opinion
This season has done something rare for a long-running adaptation: it has been paying off a decade of setup in broadcast order, without a recap episode in sight, and it has trusted the audience to keep up. Handing the finale 45 minutes is the least the production could do. A run this dense would be strangled by a standard slot — Emilia's big confrontation would be trimmed to make room for an ad break, and the tower sequence would land as a montage. WHITE FOX gets to let it breathe instead.
The sour note is scheduling. An extended special that pushes regional broadcasts means part of Japan watches the ending at 2:25am on a Wednesday, and everyone outside Japan waits on a simulcast to keep up. There is a wider lesson here for anime production committees: if you build a season that earns an extended finale, the international release plan should earn it too. The 45-minute cut is the right decision; it just should not be a domestic-only luxury.
