Re:ZERO finally gives its Divine Dragon a voice

The Re:ZERO anime has spent years keeping one of its more important characters off the cast list, and on 16 September the show's official portal fixed that: Daisuke Ono is voicing Volcanica, the Divine Dragon of Lugunica. His first lines turned up in the same day's episode, the 83rd, titled “Good Loser”.

Who is Volcanica?

The character profile that arrived with the announcement is written to tease rather than explain. Volcanica is the legendary Divine Dragon said to have sealed a pact with the king of Lugunica 400 years ago, one of the Three Great Heroes who saved the world, and a presence said to hold immense power and an important part in keeping that world in balance. He is widely known as the kingdom's guardian and held in awe, while his ecology, the page adds, stays wrapped in mystery.

Where does the fourth season stand?

Season four is a two-part production and it is still running. The Loss arc, 11 episodes, opened on 8 April; the Recapture arc, eight episodes, began on 12 August, both on TOKYO MX, AT-X and 21 regional stations. Episode 83 falls inside the Recapture arc, which makes this a reveal delivered deep into the season rather than a teaser for one.

In Japan the streaming line-up is generous. Abema and d Anime Store take the earliest streams each Wednesday at 22:30 JST, with niconico, U-NEXT, Anime Hōdai, Lemino, DMM TV, FOD, Hulu, TELASA, Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and TVer among the services that follow on Saturdays. That is the domestic picture, and the announcement says nothing about international availability, so nothing here changes the evening plans of anyone watching from the UK.

What the announcement did not include

Two things are worth flagging, because both are easy to over-read. There is no new production news attached: the portal added a cast credit and a profile, and the nine regional stations re-timing episode 83 around special programming are a scheduling story, not a content one. Nor did the page name an international streamer for this season, so any claim of a worldwide simulcast remains unconfirmed.

Our opinion

Casting is an odd thing to keep in a safe for four seasons, and Re:ZERO has done exactly that. Volcanica has loomed over Lugunica's politics since the story started, so giving him a voice is the point where the lore turns into a performance, and doing it inside the episode rather than in a trailer is the more confident choice: the reveal lands as part of the story instead of as marketing. There is a calculation in it too, because long-running shows need beats between seasons and a withheld credit is free publicity that fandom distributes for you. The gamble is that the performance now has to carry everything the character has been promised. A guardian dragon who has been talked up this long cannot turn up sounding ordinary.
