Suica Penguin mascot bag launches in three colours
Kinokuniya’s final Suica Penguin goods release combines a mascot, a reusable shopping bag and three colour options.
Suica Penguin is getting one final Kinokuniya shopping companion before the character leaves its current role. Kinokuniya will launch a Suica Penguin mascot bag in green, red and navy, with online sales beginning at 8pm on 5 November and shop sales following on 6 November. Each one costs ¥3,300, including tax. 1
The product combines a small Suica Penguin mascot with a fold-away shopping bag. The reusable bag is stored behind a zip on the mascot’s back, while a carabiner lets owners attach the character to an everyday bag. Kinokuniya’s official campaign page presents the three colour options and confirms that the accompanying shopping bag carries a Kinokuniya logo alongside a travel-themed Suica Penguin design. 2
The mascot measures roughly 14cm high, with an overall length of about 21cm when the carabiner is included. The fold-away shopping bag measures approximately 32cm by 25cm, making the item a compact character accessory that also has a practical use during smaller shopping trips.
A final Suica Penguin release
The timing gives this product more significance than a routine character collaboration. JR East has announced that the Suica Penguin will move on to a new place at the end of fiscal 2026, in March 2027, and Kinokuniya describes this as its final Suica Penguin goods release. The mascot has been part of the Suica identity since 2001, making the new bag a small piece of merchandise tied to a much bigger change for the character.
The official Kinokuniya page shows the mascot bags in all three colours, with each Penguin carrying a matching version of the store-branded bag. The green, red and navy options share the same basic design, while the strap and bag details change colour to match. The product is intended to work in two ways: as a character mascot clipped to a larger bag, and as a reusable bag when its contents are unfolded.
The release is limited to Kinokuniya’s official online store and Kinokuniya shops. The retailer notes that product availability may end without notice, so the online launch time is the clearest opportunity for shoppers who want one of the three versions.
Our opinion
This is a neatly judged piece of character merchandise because the gimmick is useful without hiding the character. The Penguin remains visible when the item is clipped to a bag, but the hidden shopping bag gives it a purpose beyond sitting on a shelf. Offering three colours also makes the collaboration feel like a proper final range rather than a single novelty item.
The stronger appeal, though, comes from the timing. Suica Penguin merchandise has always traded on familiarity, and a final Kinokuniya release gives that familiar design a sense of occasion. It is a modest product, but the combination of a practical accessory, a clear first-party campaign and the character’s approaching departure makes this one worth noting for Suica Penguin collectors.
