The Apothecary Diaries is heading to cinemas on 11 December, and its first wave of bonuses, advance-ticket plans and tie-in broadcasts has now been outlined. The film is the franchise’s first theatrical feature and tells a new mystery written from a story concept by novelist Natsu Hyuuga. 1

What has been announced

The first cinema giveaway will be a 150,000-copy booklet available from opening day. It includes a new short story about Maomao and Jinshi, plus interviews with Hyuuga and cast members Aoi Yuuki, Takeo Otsuka and Marija Ise, alongside character artwork. The booklet is limited, so cinemas may run out before the end of the theatrical window. 1

Advance tickets for the second sales round go on sale on 13 November. Designs vary by retailer, with one featuring Maomao and Jinshi in theatrical costumes and another using original key art of Maomao, Jinshi and Moku Sei. Theatre purchases also include a limited clear file, while TOHO animation STORE ONLINE and FamilyMart will offer bundled merchandise. 1

A world-premiere completion screening is planned for 5 December in Tokyo, with cast members including Yuuki, Otsuka, Marija Ise, Ai Mikami, Kensho Ono and Miyuki Sawashiro expected to appear. Further venue and application details are due through the official website, social accounts and TOHO-ONE. 1

The film’s 11 December release will also be accompanied by a Friday Road Show special edition of the television anime. The broadcast will focus on the second season’s latter cour and add around four minutes of new footage. The first three cour-based compilation streams are scheduled to begin on 31 October, 14 November and 28 November respectively. 1

A novelisation of the film’s story arrives on 9 December, alongside a new manga serialisation on Sunday Webry. The franchise’s animal-themed merchandise line, Kusuriya Animals, is also expanding around the film campaign. 1

Why it matters

This is a broad theatrical campaign rather than a single trailer-led update: the film, a television recap, streaming catch-ups, a novel and a manga launch are all being lined up around the same December weekend. That gives returning viewers several ways into the new story, while the limited booklet and ticket bundles are clearly aimed at turning opening weekend into an event.

The official trailer presents Maomao, Jinshi and their companions against the film’s mysterious water-city setting, reinforcing that this is a new adventure rather than a compilation. 2

Our opinion

The campaign is doing the sensible thing for a first The Apothecary Diaries film: it makes the cinema release feel like the centre of a wider occasion without pretending that every extra is essential. The booklet is the most meaningful bonus because it adds new story material, while the television special and catch-up schedule give newer viewers a practical route into the film. The risk is simply overload, but the staggered rollout should help the different pieces land without competing for the same attention.
