McDonald’s Japan will add six Detective Precure-themed toys to its Happy Set menu from 13 November, with the range released in three waves over roughly four weeks. The collaboration is based on Star Detective Precure! (名探偵プリキュア!), the 23rd entry in the long-running Precure franchise, and will be available at participating restaurants while stocks last.1

The first wave runs from 13 to 19 November and includes three toys. The Kit Mirror Loupe with Hair Comb is inspired by the items used by Cure Answer and Cure Mystic, and includes character cards that change when moved between the loupe and comb. A Top of Relief fragrance case toy, modelled on Cure Eclair’s transformation item, opens to reveal a badge frame for its included card. The third item is a keyring based on the Prit Kit voice memo, with a small case for storing objects.1

The second wave runs from 20 to 26 November. It adds a Jewel Cure Watch with transformation cards, a Prit Kit Book accessory case with a pen, and a rotating Prit Kit Gloss toy. The watch includes a long-hand sticker for its face and two cards featuring the Precure characters and fairies; moving the rear tab changes the illustration and creates a simple transformation-themed play feature.1

The accessory case is styled after a Prit Kit book and includes a pen with a clip for attaching it to clothing. The gloss toy uses a small window to show illustrations of Mori Aruruka and Cure Arcana, with a rotating mechanism that changes the picture. Both the case and gloss can be carried using their rings, according to the announcement.1

From 27 November, the third wave will offer one of the six toys from the first two waves. McDonald’s says the toy boxes will also have different designs during the first and second waves. The company’s official Happy Set page lists the Detective Precure release alongside the accompanying McDonald’s Block promotion and shows the campaign artwork used for this story.2

The promotion also includes a voice-card campaign. Customers who buy at least ¥1,500 of eligible products, including one Detective Precure Happy Set, can enter a draw for one of 500 voice cards featuring an original message from Cure Answer. The card uses a smartphone-readable QR code and an answer phrase to unlock three voice messages. Receipts from restaurants, mobile orders and delivery services including Uber Eats and Demae-can can be used for entry, subject to the campaign rules.1

Star Detective Precure! follows Anna Akechi, who encounters a fairy called Pochitan and travels back to 1999 after being surrounded by mysterious light. In that earlier era she meets Mikuru Kobayashi and the fairy Professor Jet, then decides to become a detective at the Cure-At Detective Agency while taking on the Phantom Gang. The related film, Star Detective Precure! The Mysterious Garden and Two Secrets, is also in cinemas in Japan.1

Our opinion

This is a neat example of a tie-in that understands the appeal of its source material. Rather than simply printing characters on generic toys, the first two waves turn detective and transformation props into small pieces of role-play kit: a loupe, voice memo, watch and gloss all give children something to handle and change. The three-wave rollout also gives the campaign a reason to stay visible beyond its opening weekend.

The important practical detail is availability. The toys are limited, cannot be selected at purchase and may be replaced once stock runs out. That makes the 13 November start date useful information for families and collectors, but it is not a guarantee that every restaurant will carry every design throughout the campaign.
