Fate/EXTRA Record reveals rival Masters in new trailer
Aniplex's new RIVAL's SIDE trailer introduces Rin, Shinji and the other Masters facing players in Fate/EXTRA Record.
Aniplex has introduced the rival Masters and Servants standing against players in Fate/EXTRA Record, the remake of the 2010 PSP RPG. The new RIVAL's SIDE trailer puts Rin Tohsaka and Shinji Matou at the front of a wider cast of opponents, with Kana Ueda and Hiroshi Kamiya returning to voice the characters. 12
The rival cast
The trailer and accompanying announcement introduce Rani VIII, Leonardo B. Harwey, Julius B. Harwey, Dan Blackmore, Monji Gatou, Alice and Run Ru-kun. Their Servants remain unnamed for now, preserving the mystery at the centre of the Moon Holy Grail War. 12
A remake with a 2027 release
Fate/EXTRA Record rebuilds Marvelous and TYPE-MOON's 2010 PSP game for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Aniplex says the remake will launch worldwide on 28 January 2027, with a deck-building command battle system and expanded presentation for the Extraverse setting. 12
The original game's digital world sees 128 Masters and their Servants compete in a tournament on the Moon. The remake brings back character designer Arco Wada, with music by Yoshimasa Terui and Keita Haga. 2
Our opinion
The RIVAL's SIDE trailer is doing the sensible thing for a remake with a devoted audience: it makes the familiar faces feel like the main event while keeping enough Servant identities hidden to give the eventual battles some mystery. Rin and Shinji are the obvious hooks, but the broader line-up suggests this remake is treating the original's strange Moon setting as a full ensemble story rather than a nostalgia cameo reel.
